This work is an attempt to articulate the nature of land as a material, conceptual, and ontological foundation for Indigenous ways of knowing, being, and valuing. Land is key to the operations of coloniality, but the power of the land is also the key anticolonial force that grounds Indigenous liberation. ![]() The book functions as a way of preserving important knowledge and tradition, contextualizing that knowledge within Canada's colonial legacy and providing an Inuit perspective on how we relate to each other, to other living beings and the environment. Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit - meaning all the extensive knowledge and experience passed from generation to generation - is a collection of contributions by well- known and respected Inuit Elders. Unfortunately, most people have a very limited understanding of Inuit culture, and often apply only a few trappings of culture - past practices, artifacts and catchwords -to projects to justify cultural relevance. While much research has articulated the impacts of colonization and recognized that Indigenous cultures and worldviews are central to the well-being of Indigenous peoples and communities, little work has been done to preserve Inuit culture. ![]() The Inuit have experienced colonization and the resulting disregard for the societal systems, beliefs and support structures foundational to Inuit culture for generations. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Dworkin evidently doesn't believe that most of the strictures that have enmeshed women have been primarily geared to assure the continuation of the species and to guarantee paternity. ![]() But it's a far leap to conclude that the sex act in and of itself mandates a lower status for women. The selected fictional works, in particular, demonstrate that men are often uncomfortable with their own sexuality and frequently hostile to women. It is this inherent inequality, says Dworkin, that has inspired the body of canon and civil law that codifies the inferiority of women and has also produced a language that frequently demeans women, plus much literature that reinforces what is accepted as woman's essential ""inferiority."" In developing her thesis, Dworkin cites numerous sources: Holy Scripture, Moses Maimonides, Leo Tolstoy, Gustave Flaubert, Kobo Abe, Isaac Bashevis Singer, etc. The male, she says, takes the female as an imperialist nation subdues a colonial people. Both sexes, she says, regard copulation as a possession by the male of the female. To Dworkin the sex act is ""an act of invasion and ownership"" which, in itself, renders the male dominant, the female subordinate. A noted feminist argues that the root cause for female oppression is-hang on-sexual intercourse. ![]() ![]() In this way, she gets by, makes a friendship with her young teacher and tries to remember what life was like before. Everyone else around Manami seems to just about cope with their new incarceration, but she does not. This is a tragic, horrible moment and, from this point, we are catapulted into Manami’s distraught emotions of leaving her dog behind and we experience the life of a prison camp through these emotions. They are taken to a desert prison-village with thousands of other Japanese-Americans (most of whom are US citizens and wrongly imprisoned), but Manami’s little dog, Yujinn, is not allowed to go. The story centres around little Manami, and her family, as they are forced by soldiers to leave their home on the American Bainbridge Island, just after Japan attacks Pearl Harbor. ![]() ![]() ![]() But, because Lois has been, it makes the story of Manami – a Japanese-American prisoner of war – all the more involving, easy to read and more powerful. Paper Wishes by Lois Sepahban is a beautiful little book is written with such brevity and precise wording that, on occasions, it’s hard to believe a writer could be so ruthless with their words. ![]() ![]() ![]() I also haven’t been so touched by portrayals of male friendship since–well, ever, really. I haven’t been so nauseated by descriptions of child abuse since I read Tampa and that says a lot. This book is a lot, and it deserves every content warning and tear-filled review it’s received. He’s a tortured, fragile character who makes terrible decisions most of the time, and were he not surrounded by such believably loving friends and family he’d be very difficult to like but much easier to pity. ![]() The book is mostly about how the hideous demons of Jude’s past keep him from fully recognizing the angels of his present. ![]() They’re a motley crew–all different races, classes and sexualities–but the main character is Jude, the shyest and most secretive of the group, tortured by an unspeakable past but determined to succeed despite it. Jude, Willem, JB and Malcolm meet during their freshman year of university, and luckily the friendship lasts a lifetime–through failures, successes, relationships, jobs, deaths and heartbreak. ![]() ![]() I author the Jane Austen’s World blog, which examines the Regency era during Jane Austen’s time. Rehm’s website, which also features a link to the interview and a 4-page excerpt of the novel. As the interview wore on it became obvious to me that 1) this author, who had not read Pride and Prejudice since she was a teenager, should have done more research about the economic and social situation of the Bennets, Darcys, and Bingleys in Regency England, and how this impacted their actions, and that 2) Diane Rehm and Sittenfeld had little understanding of the economic impact that Austenesque films, television shows, book adaptations, blogs, online forums, and fan fiction have on today’s book and entertainment industry.Īfter listening (impatiently) to the interview, I wrote this comment on Ms. On Thursday, April 21, 2016, Diane Rehm, one of my favorite radio hosts, interviewed Sittenfeld regarding her new novel. ![]() In 2011, The Austen Project approached best-selling author Curtis Sittenfeld to write a modern retelling of Pride and Prejudice, which she entitled Eligible (out in bookstores now). ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Everything hinges on keeping Washington alive-not the easiest task protecting someone famous for leading battles on the front lines while perched on a horse. John always knew history could change on a dime, but not after it already happened.
